SCARP internal award nomination process
A summary of SCARP's internal awards is provided below. Award amounts vary and typically range between $1,000 and $6,000.
Please self-identify your eligibility for selected awards and submit an awards application in order to be considered. Watch out for reminder notices regarding each year's deadline. These deadlines are firm and the awards committee will not consider late submissions.
Also to note:
- In those cases where an award can only be allocated to a certain program or cohort, there`s a note included in the award description. Aside from these caveats, please consider the awards open to currently registered SCARP students.
- The Becky Tarbotton Memorial Scholarship requires the additional submission of a CV and essay (up to 1000 words) to grad.scarp@ubc.ca.
List of SCARP's internal awards
Access Planning Scholarship in Community & Regional Planning
Up to four scholarships totalling $5,000 have been made available annually through a gift from Access Planning for students in their final year of the Master of Community and Regional Planning program. Students must demonstrate that their final thesis, capstone project, or internship experience builds more equitable, just, and people-focused cities and communities.
Access Planning is an independent planning advisory firm co-founded by Karen Peachey (B.A. 1994, M.A. Planning 1998) and Tamim Raad (B.Com. 1993, M.A. Planning 1998). Access Planning focuses on working with clients to unlock creative, adaptive, and efficient approaches to better community planning, urban transportation systems, and urban design that results in places that welcome, work for, and inspire the diversity of people that live in them.
The scholarships are made on the recommendation of the School of Community and Regional Planning, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) Prize
A certificate is offered by the American Institute of Certified Planners to an outstanding graduating student in Community and Regional Planning. No monetary value.

Becky Tarbotton Memorial Scholarship
A $6,150 scholarship has been made available through an endowment established by the Tarbotton family and friends in memory of Rebecca (Becky) Tarbotton, for a second-year graduate student in the School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) in the Faculty of Applied Science who demonstrates exceptional leadership and commitment in the fields of environmental and social justice.
Becky was a vibrant and inspirational leader and visionary who graduated from SCARP and dedicated her career to protecting the environment and defending human rights.
The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Community and Regional Planning in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Brahm Wiesman Memorial Scholarship
Scholarships totalling $32,150 have been made available through an endowment created by Mrs. Madge Wiesman, and augmented by colleagues and friends, in memory of her husband, Professor Brahm Wiesman. Professor Wiesman was the Director of UBC's School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) for many years.
The scholarships are offered to students in the School of Community and Regional Planning for travel abroad to Asia and Global South countries elsewhere in order to advance their SCARP-related research. The scholarships are made on the recommendation of the School of Community and Regional Planning in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

David and Robin Whetter Award in Community and Regional Planning
Awards totalling $2,000 have been made available annually through a gift from Cornerstone Planning Group in honour of David Whetter (B.Arch. 1970, M.Sc. (Bus Admin) 1976) and Robin Whetter, for first-year graduate students in the Master of Arts in Planning, Master of Science in Planning, or the Master of Community and Regional Planning programs in the School of Community and Regional Planning. Preference will be given to students with an interest in process management and/or decision-making for implementing ideas and monitoring results. David Whetter is a Partner Emeritus at Cornerstone Planning Group and has been a planning consultant since 1971. He began researching general systems theory and organizational decision-making analysis while studying under Professor Andrew Gruft at the UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. David completed a Master of Science in International Business at UBC and developed a systems framework for functional facilities planning with colleagues at Cornerstone. This award was established in recognition of the impact of David's approach to planning, as well as the contributions of his wife Robin to his work through their fifty years of extensive global travel. The awards are made on the recommendation of the School of Community and Regional Planning, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. |

Emergency Preparedness Conference Award
A $4,800 award endowed by the Emergency Preparedness Conference is offered to graduate students concentrating in Emergency Planning. Recipients will be invited to the annual Emergency Preparedness Conference and may be encouraged to present their work at a subsequent meeting. The award is made on the nomination of a Selection Committee, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

How Yin and Wai Hung (Elsie) Leung Award in Community and Regional Planning
Awards totalling $1,550 have been made available through an endowment established by How Yin Leung (M.Sc. 1970) and his wife, Wai Hung (Elsie) Leung for outstanding graduate students enrolled in a degree program and/or engaged in a research project offered by the School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP). Financial need may be considered. How Yin, also a graduate and scholarship recipient from SCARP, was a planner and member of senior management in the City of Surrey, BC for the majority of his planning career prior to his retirement in 2005. How Yin and his wife Elsie are dedicated to encouraging and supporting outstanding graduate students enrolled in the programs offered by How Yin's alma mater. The awards are made on the recommendation of the School of Community and Regional Planning, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. |

H. Peter Oberlander Medal & Prize
A $1200 prize accompanied by a medal has been endowed in honour of H. Peter Oberlander, the founding Director of the School of Community and Regional Planning and subsequently the founding Director of the Centre for Human Settlements. The prize is awarded to the head of the graduating class in the School of Community and Regional Planning. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Community and Regional Planning.

H. Peter Oberlander Scholarship in Community and Regional Planning
A $7,050 scholarship has been endowed by the Oberlander family to honour the memory and professional contributions of H. Peter Oberlander, founder of the School of Community and Regional Planning. The scholarship is intended for international students pursuing their masters or doctoral studies at the School of Community and Regional Planning. The award is made on the recommendation of the School in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

J. Armand Bombardier Sustainable Transportation Fellowship
Up to three fellowships totalling $22,100 have been made available through an endowment established by Bombardier for graduate students in the School of Community and Regional Planning who are focused on research in any one of the three areas:
- Equity and community engagement
- Population and public health
- Environmental and sustainability issues associated with transportation
Awardees are eligible for an additional $800 in travel funding for research related activities. Recommendations are made by the School of Community and Regional Planning in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Lambda Alpha International Vancouver Prize in Land Economics
A prize is offered by the Vancouver Chapter of Lambda Alpha International (an honorary land economics society) to a student who excels in Urban and Real Estate Economics. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Community and Regional Planning.

The prize alternates between being given to a student in the Sauder School of Business in even numbered years and the School of Community and Regional Planning in odd numbered years. The award is made on the recommendation of the Sauder School of Business or the School of Community and Regional Planning. Lawrence Munroe Memorial Scholarship
A $4,950 scholarship has been made available through an endowment established by Diana L. Belhouse (BA 1947, LLB 1973), to honour the memory of her husband, Lawrence R. Munroe, P.Eng. (BASc, Civil Engineering 1946). The award is available to outstanding students in the School of Community and Regional Planning who are Canadian citizens and who majored in or received an undergraduate degree in geography or civil engineering from the University of British Columbia or the University of Victoria. Lawrence began his successful career in 1946 with the Vancouver Town Planning Commission until the creation of City of Vancouver Planning Department where he held the position of Associate Director of Planning, until his passing at 47 years of age in 1970.
In honour of Lawrence's influence on the beautification of the City of Vancouver and lifetime work, preference will be given to students who have demonstrated an interest in urban design which focuses on the creation and retention of green space and enhances the beauty of cities or urban areas. The award is made on the recommendation of the School of Community and Regional Planning, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Planning Institute of BC Graduate Scholarship in Planning
A $3,000 scholarship is offered by the Planning Institute of British Columbia to a student who maintains high academic standing in Community and Regional Planning and exhibits leadership skills in student or community planning activities.
