Facilities

The West Mall Annex, which includes the Centre for Human Settlements, houses study space for students, a reading room, a student lounge and kitchen, computer labs, two large classrooms, a seminar room, a student meeting room, a resource room, and faculty offices.  The Lasserre Building houses SCARP's main office, the Director's office, the administrators' offices, the urban design studio and urban design lab, and some faculty offices. The School is supported by the Art + Architecture + Planning Division of the UBC library (see below), as well as online subject guides and Paula Farrar our planning liaison librarian.

West Mall Annex (WMAX) Room WMAX 142:

A laser printer is available for student use in West Mall Annex 142. To access this room students must order a key through the SCARP office. There is a charge of 10 cents a copy using a printer card purchased in the SCARP office.

Urban Design Studio and Computer Lab

Room: Lasserre 207 - The Urban Design Studio can accommodate up to 16 students with a dedicated drawing desk and drawers.  An adjacent computer lab includes 7 workstations and a high end colour laser printer.  These facilities are available for urban design students and students taking urban design classes. A course fee is charged for the Urban Design Studio courses or for use of the Urban Design Computer Lab.

Disaster Reduction Planning Collaboratory

Room: WMAX 243 - This lab is a collaborative research facility for studies on disaster management and urban sustainability planning. It includes high-end computers, GIS and other software, and related equipment (e.g., digitizer and plotter, interactive whiteboard, web-conferencing facilities).

Bombardier Transportation Lab (www.health-design.spph.ubc.ca)

Room: WMAX 217 - This lab is used to assess and facilitate research on the linkages between built environment, travel behaviour, and public health. The lab includes high end computers and software and is available for students working in this research area.

Cosmopolis Multi-media Lab

Room: WMAX 250 - The lab has diverse research purposes, but primarily it is for students to explore and evaluate the applicability of information and communication technologies to participatory planning processes in Vancouver. Thirteen computers, one colour printer, one plotter ($10 per printed page for plotter), and video cameras are available for students. A fee is charged for use of the printers. Printer cards can be purchased in the SCARP main office. Access to this lab requires that a student be working on a faculty supervised research project and have taken PLAN 548R (Multimedia for Planners) or have evidence of prior training in and experience with multimedia.

UBC Library Resources & Services 

UBC Library is the second-largest research library in Canada and a high-ranking member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). The Art + Architecture + Planning Division of the UBC Library, in the newly renovated Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, houses the core planning collection and provides reference and instructional support via the Planning Liaison Librarian, Paula Farrar.  Due to the interdisciplinary nature of planning, collections in the Koerner Library (social sciences, government publications, data and statistics), David Lam Library (business and transportation) and Woodward Library (health and land & food systems) also support SCARP’s research and teaching.

THE GIS/Research Data Lab is located in the Walter C. Koerner Library, Room 218A (second floor).  It is intended to be a space for long-term academic research projects requiring GIS and/or statistical software and resources.  It has six Dell computer workstations and Samsung widescreen LCD monitors.  The lab has the following software: ESRI ArcGIS/ArcInfo, Beyond 2020 Browser, Google Ear, R Statistics and Data Analysis Language, SAFE FME Desktop Translator/Converter, SPSS Statistics Package, Stata Data Analysis and Statistical Software; StatTransfer Data Conversion Package.  Approval is required to access the GIS/Research Data Lab.
